Also, I am very sad because I am going abroad for two weeks ON Friday the 28th and will probably have to wait till I get back to watch SPN. D: D: I tried for Saturday, but the ticket price goes up by about £100 the next day, and as much as I love SPN, I am not paying £100 for one episode. So save a little discussion for me on the 13th!

I am the only person in the office. It is Christmas Eve Eve. I am finding it very hard to actually do any work. I keep getting distracted by a computer game where a cat tries to make itself fat by eating lots of sushi.
persuna: (Sam is sad)
Oh dear. I have actually lost my voice. Curse you laryngitis.

So this week was meant to be when I got my laptop back, but I phoned the Apple store yesterday and they said that the parts hadn't even ARRIVED yet. D: They don't know why, and they agree it is taking a surprisingly long time, but can only wait. Oh, and it may take another two to four (four!) weeks after they receive the parts to fit them. This is all taking us dangerously close to me MISSING THE SUPERNATURAL PREMIERE.

Ugh. This is like when I was in Libya, possibly the one place in the world that doesn't sell Harry Potter books, when Deathly Hallows was released.

*pout*

In other news, the new job is still going well! And I finally caved and got a bus pass, which makes me disproportionately happy. Travel freedom! It has been so long. I may use it mainly to travel to Internet cafes. I have also become slightly obsessed with cooking things in a Thermos with boiling water. You're limited to grains and quick cooking dried things like lentils, but it's surprisingly yummy and you have 8 hours to decide when you want to eat it. This stops me from doing that thing where I put off making dinner all evening and end up eating dry toast at 11.00.

Hello flist! Several things.

1. For those wondering what happened with the job situation, I went for... Option 3! A hitherto unconsidered option. I accepted Job 1 and will also work part time in my current job to make up a full time job. I have to be the assistant of the person I used to be, which is a little odd, but hey. Maybe one day I can have £0 instead of the minus something I currently do. Dare to dream! It is still slightly less money than Job A, but now only just. I start the new job in the middle of next week. Slightly petrifying!

2. I am currently, due to aforementioned continuing part time in my current office, without an official desk. By September there will be a free permanent place to sit, but until then I sit at the desk of whoever is on leave. Today (in fact, this month), that person is the Director of the whole department. I have a huge desk and four walls and windows and what is meant to be a really comfortable chair. I'm actually not a big fan of the back support thing attached to the chair, but am too afraid to adjust anything in case I can't get the chair back to how it was. The private office is mostly cool, but guys, it is lonely at the top. I may be able to go on lj without fear of being caught, but I miss chatting casually throughout the day to everyone else in the office. I just heard laughter and I have no idea what it was about!

3. My computer charger is broken, again, which is a bit of a downer. Thankfully I should still be in warranty and am going to London (where the closest official Apple Store is) anyway for a birthday party this Saturday, so should only have to endure a few laptop free days. But still, I am very pouty about it and can't tell RL people why I mind so much. I have an addiction, okay! Also, I want to know who makes the SYTYCD final.

4. All complaints are balanced out ten million times over by PROPOSITION 8 OVERTURNED IN CALIFORNIA!!!! :D :D :D

Hello! You may or may not have noticed me vanishing more than usual the past while, but I am going to attempt to be back more. I have been insanely busy (this always seems to happen during Big Bang season WHY GOD WHY) with life stuff and have barely had time to skim my flist, watch Leverage (pretzels!) and White Collar (I nearly died of squee, there may be more on that later) and pine for Sam Winchester. I did meet [livejournal.com profile] laulan yonks ago (she is even more lovely in person and I thoroughly endorse and recommend her) and then two people left my office and I somehow ended up with all their work. Since then I rather feel BT should refund my Broadband fee.

Anyway, I am selfishly back to implore participation in my first ever *drumroll* POLL!

The situation is as follows. I have somehow gone from miserable career prospects (being forced to go down to three days a week next month in an interesting but ridiculously badly paid job) to suddenly having two potential jobs. I have to decide this week and I am torn like a bi-bro fangirl watching season 4. I have prepared a handy-dandy table that outlines my two choices.

Job 1Job A
One year of maternity coverSix month contract which may be extended subject to funding.
This means no long term prospect of employment, but I really want to move to London next year anyway and this way I could not get complacent and settled and would have to be looking for a new job around the end of my lease. Sometimes tough decisions have to be made for future!persuna's own good. They say six months, but there is a very good chance of a permanent job. Those can be hard to find and I am SO sick of never knowing what is to become of me more than a month or two in advance.
Decent annual salary band, but a part time position. I will get about 70% of the full salary. The exact same salary band, but full time.
Gross salary will be enough to live on, but maybe not enough to save significantly. I will have more free time, which would be useful for an evening course I really want to do. And fandom.More money! That speaks for itself. There might be a chance my account could one day be real money and not whatever is left of my overdraft!
The job actually sounds interesting. It's still admin, but admin in an cool department with people who seem nice and relaxed and one corner festooned with pictures of George Clooney. I am not extra-specially into George, but I am fond, and I like what it says about the office. This job will be similar to what I do now, but while everyone seems like lovely people it is a slightly more… polished office than Job 1. I get the feeling they all sit up straight and that five simultaneous calenders of their favourite celebrity would be unseemly. This could be an unfair assesment.
I won't have to ask people for money.I will have to ask people for money. Subtly. And refer to people as "Prospects". I have avoided that so far.
Doesn't offer any clear future career path. Could just be more messing around, putting off making any decisions about any form of life plan.Offers career path in area I am not keen on. See above point.
In a few months the office will move to a random outskirt location while office restoration happens. This will take 90% of my tenure. A minibus will be provided from the town centre. The locaton is not only central, but really close to my old office with lovely colleagues who continue to include their ex-colleagues in afterwork Monday Margaritas. I like Monday Margaritas.

Several things are good this weekend! Even apart from it being the weekend. And it being a bank holiday weekend. And those are already reason to celebrate! Anyway:

First and maybe foremost, Eurovision is on tomorrow! I was standing in a queue in Sainsbury's when I realised May was almost over and I hadn't seen Eurovision. I despaired at missing it, but it turns out to be tomorrow. *\0/* I am so excited! I will also get to watch it with my best friend in person for the first time instead of watching while on the phone as we usually do. I am excited for the indulgent lunacy of the Ukraine, the serious lunacy of the Germans and whatever weird S&M fantasy Greece have come up with this year. Yay!!!

My birthday ice cream machine finally arrived! W00t! In celebration I was going to make a range of Eurovision themed ice creams, but instead I am going to make rum and vanilla ice cream (using homemade rum vanilla essence) and red mulled wine sorbet. In fact the custard for the former is already chilling in the fridge.

I have just washed all my bedding and my bed is SO COMFY tonight.

In the morning I don't have to get up till I feel like it, instead of at 6.30 after going to bed after midnight as had happened every night this week. And next week my boss will have left the country on the big trip I have been preparing for, so it will go back to a normal pace!

Yay blessings!

P.S Has anyone read/is anyone planing to read Sera Gamble's erotic short story? I am veeeery curious. Will she have a tall, broad shouldered hero with cat eyes and a sharp jawline? I want to know what it is like but I spent all my luxury budget on ice cream ingredients...

First, a rec! A cute, funny, hot college!AU where Jensen moons over Jared in an adorkable way. I realised I had not read a fluffy J2 AU in MONTHS as I read this. It was great way to break the fast!

A Second Chance To Make A First Impression by __tiana__.

Second... has anybody else noticed that the UK press has started slashing David Cameron and Nick Clegg? The BBC made an honest to god FANVID of them. And not a very good one. The headlines are MADNESS. The Independent. The INDEPENDENT. A fangirl lives in all of us, even hardened political journalists. Apparently.

I am also feeling oddly hopeful about government! Er, I was before I noticed all the slash too. Since I have thought for about a decade that the Tories will get in any moment and only thought for about a day that the Lib Dems might have a snowball's chance of getting to be opposition, this is actually amazingly better than I thought it would be.

ALSO SPN TONIGHT HOLD ME.

Oh bugger. D: Well, it's not a win. A coalition could be interesting.

This is an interesting article about what might happen now. I wish a second election wasn't so unlikely.... I call do-over!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8659878.stm

Also, I went to bed at three and have had about four hours sleep. Apparently today at work I am being drafted for some database data entry even though I have LOADS of my actual job to do... okay, to be fair, I am mostly e-mailing my flatmate with misery. But that's not what I should be doing! My point is, I may fall asleep at my desk because I HATE DATABASES. But not enough that the fires of my rage will keep me awake.
persuna: (London is on the map)
Right, off to London to vote. Sigh. I am not hugely in the mood for hours on a bus, but such is my devotion to democracy!

A friend of mine is having an election party in London. I am debating attending.

Against

- She is definitely going to vote Conservative, and so are most of her friends.

- I do have to go to work tomorrow (no chance of a sick day) so I probably should be in bed sometime reasonable

- If I do go I definitely will not get up early enough for SPN

Pro

- I can go early and help with cake decoration

- Cake will come in three topical colours

- At least three other non-Conservatives are going

Cake may be winning....

First of all (and only a day late) I have to say, yes, Winchester with fangirls was AWESOME BEYOND BELIEF. I had even more fun than I thought I would! And a much bigger hangover! I want at least ten fangirls in the room whenever I watch an episode now... or maybe the second time so I can hear the dialogue over the squeeing.

Hello to all the shiny new people on my flist! *waves* Have an art rec! I stole it from [livejournal.com profile] moodswingers just today so it is far from exclusive, but that is HOW CUTE IT IS OMG.

Nothing else can be that cute ever again unless it actually involves Colin Ford, but the rest of her stuff still tries!

Have I Got News For You was SO AWESOME. I laughed loads! Also surreal. But awesome! Okay, the queuing was horrendous. Not because of the boredom and my persistent need to pee (till someone else in line tipped us off that ITV let you use their toilet) but because it was SO COLD. We were about 80th in line and round the corner of the studio at first. Then they moved everyone forward and we ended up in the hideous wind tunnel alley down the side. I don't know about London the past few days, but Oxford has been muggy and I have barely had to wear my coat even when it sort of rained. This morning I was a little warm in my lightest coat. Not so in London. The point is, I was not adequately layered and my friend's fingers went freakishly cold, white and corpselike till I gave her my gloves. But then we got in and we got REALLY good seats, second row right at the end, spitting distance of Ian Hislop and with a good view of both teams.

Uh, vague HIGNFY somethingpointone spoilers? )

In conclusion, if you live in the UK you should go to Hattrick and sign up to get tickets.

This week work has fixed closure days (there's bank holidays and maundy thursday and stuff) and I AM GOING TO SEE 'HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU' BEING FILMED. And then spending a five day weekend in London. Yay!! I am extremely psyched! I'm slightly underwhelmed by the host apparently being Lee Mack. Eh. But Paul Merton will be there! AND SO WILL I.

Of course then on SPN day I will be at my dad's with his landline (!!!!) Internet connection that is too old for my computer, but I shall try and figure something out. HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU. \0/

A. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
B. Tag seven people to do the same.
C. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it."

Fandom meet up was GREAT. I got to put faces to some names I'd read and learn a few totally new ones, as well as freak out some members of the general public. Discussing fandom in real life with actual people is still a huge amazing novelty I really enjoyed! Yay generally!!! And if the person who bought me the lovely scarves and pretty and useful bag is reading this, thanks a lot to them too! I love purple and I love warmth! Excellent choices.

I am also excited about the news of covert S6 lunch deals. I always thought I'd want the show to end in season 5 since that's what Kripke's plan was and I loved that he actually had a plan. I also have a superstitious fear of sixth seasons (BtVS, I blame you) and a justified fear of flogging a dead horse (for which I blame almost every TV show I've ever loved that didn't get prematurely cancelled.... there's no pleasing me, yes I know). But Kripke probably threw his plan away last season, so there's not much point looking to that for guidance, and I heard he would want a sixth season to be intimate and back to basics, which is my very favourite thing, so I am... happy and hopeful. Or rather, really really excited and trying to tamp it down to more tentative happiness and hopefulness because Kripke likes to dash my hopes and break my heart.

Mostly I just cannot face the thought that in twelve episodes and one DVD boxset's time there might be no more new Sam and Dean footage ever. EVER. Maybe I'll look back one day, when S6 has done so much retconning I can't even enjoy S2 anymore, and long for the last vestiges of my younger self's happy, ignorant naiveté, but right now I am squeeful. Maybe Sam and Dean will get a year of relative happiness/bog standard hunting misery between sorting out Lucifer and dying their inevitable bloody depressing deaths! MAYBE.

Edit: And okay, maybe it would suck for Jared and Jensen to have to stay in Vancouver longer than they want to, but I've thought about it and decided that since they are successful in their dream career and also engaged to hot women, I can live it. Jared, Jensen, I love you, but I also love Sam and Dean. Sorry.

persuna: (A lot to read)
I'm actually posting again! It's been a while, but first I had no Internet, and then my charger broke, and then I was just lazy. But very soon I will be compelled to ramble weekly about Sam and Dean, so It's time to get derusted. Last month I was actually kind of apathetic about hiatus being over and Supernatural coming back... but now we're really getting down to the wire and the CW released that awesome O Death promo I am PSYCHED once more. Very effective marketing for once CW!

Of course being psyched makes waiting worse, so I've been attempting to distract myself with True Blood. I tried a while ago to watch the first episode and wasn't really sucked in, but I think that had more to do with the constant crashing of the streaming website I was trying to watch it on. But it's actually pretty good! It makes me wonder what Supernatural would be like if it was on cable.... But anyway, I am up to S1 episode 11 and the absolute hilarity of the real burden of Bill's sentence being not the tragic guilt of murdering a beautiful innocent young girl, but of being saddled with the UNDEAD'S MOST ANNOYING TEENAGER. Seriously, his face when she says he's the worst maker ever. Hee. I don't really love any of the characters or relationships that much though. They're all too fucked up and realistic! Someone will be awesome one episode (Lafayette putting those AIDS burger bigots in their place and Jason high fiving him), and I start to warm up to them, but they never keep it up long enough for me to love them while accepting their faults (Um, all the drug dealing and every other interaction Jason has). So I appreciate it, but I don't love it.

I saw the Time Traveller's Wife, and like all film adaptations it wasn't perfect. Claire's hair was the wrong colour and they changed and simplified and cut things and the falling pile of clothes thing was inappropriately amusing... but I may have cried almost the whole way through. Which I think that means I really really enjoyed it. I also had to hurry and get the audiobook right after and so now I am tearing up in many inappropriate public locations, such as Sainsbury's this afternoon when Henry met Alba for the first time.

Finally, I am moving soon! To Oxford not London, because the only place in London I can afford to live is with my dad, and I do not know how I got to adulthood in that tiny one bedroom flat with someone as hectic as my father. I love him to death, but I need more space. And cleaner kitchen surfaces. Oxford is commuting distance and I will be living with my best friend since I was eleven, so I fully expect funtimes to commence shortly! \0/

I lied about finally. Here's a random tv show meme I found somewhere or other yonks ago and never posted. )
persuna: (HP Trio)
I went to see Harry Potter a couple of days ago at a ridiculously early hour (well, 10.00am, I didn't know cinemas even opened that early) because my friend and I both had to go to work in the afternoon and evening when normal people go... and I really enjoyed it! Even though we missed the first something minutes for no good reason. You see, there was a performance at 9.45 and a performance at 10.15 and we arrived at 10.00 and asked for tickets to Harry Potter... and didn't realise until we walked into our screen that we were sold tickets for the 9.45. Which for some reason did not have the standard 20-30 minutes of ads and previews but was already at Slughorn's. And now I wish we'd gone and asked for new tickets, but at the time we just scrambled into seats. Damn it. I suppose the cashier did let me use my money off voucher, even though it was two days expired, so maybe I just lost my 70p worth of movie. Ah well. I shall see it again at some point, and there's probably a cam copy online I can peek at. Cut for rambling and film/book spoilers. )

I've even been catching up some HP fics that were WIPs when I drifted away from fandom, or checking to see if my old favourite authors have done new stuff, and enjoying it in a hiatusy way. Overall I think the fic in SPN fandom is better (or maybe it's more that the average quality is higher since the audience is smaller and older and that the general tone is more adult, grounded in a grittier version of reality than the quirky Victorian fantasy of HP? And I now spend more time on lj and less time on specific fic sites?), but I do miss the endless possibilities of magic as a plot device and the comforting familiarity of the wizarding world and British spelling/locations/vocabulary. And the huge variety of pairings. And girls. And so many stories involving my favourite character as the main focus without me ending up feeling guilty for marginalizing my second favourite character. I even sort of miss the formulaic school structure. SPN has its own formulas of course, but they're slightly less entrenched. I might have to reread DH too. I realised the other day that a scene I could have sworn happened was from a fanfic that I read more times than the book. Oh dear.

Also, Leverage = AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. It's one of those shows where watching it alone is actually frustrating because I feel the constant need to nudge someone else so we can wink at each other and acknowledge the awesomeness and how we both get it (making us maybe 1% as awesome as the writers and actors, but that's still 1% we didn't have before).

Harper's Island. I did not see that coming. Tell me you did and I may call you a liar.
